A FIFA delegation overseeing plans for the 2030 men’s World Cup visited San Mamés in Bilbao on Thursday.
As reported by as.com, Athletic’s home has a strong track record, including a Women’s Champions League final and a men’s Europa League final, and had been slated to stage Euro 2020 matches before COVID intervened.
After earlier stops in Barcelona, Zaragoza, Madrid and Sevilla, FIFA’s experts, accompanied by a Royal Spanish Football Federation delegation, inspected the 53,331-capacity ground.
Eduard Dervishaj, the RFEF’s director of international relations, led the tour. The new San Mamés was completed in September 2013 after a three-year build. It was delivered in two phases, first two sides and one end, then the final end and VIP boxes.
The 2030 tournament will be staged in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, while opening matches will be played in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to mark the centenary of the first World Cup.
The delegation will also visit Portugal and Morocco in the coming days.
