Flamengo sacked FILIPE LUÍS on Tuesday, despite last season’s Copa Libertadores win and an 11-0 aggregate over Madureira that secured a Campeonato Carioca final place hours earlier.

According to UOL Esporte, the decision followed secret talks with BlueCo. During renewal negotiations he went quiet for three days to pursue a move, was later told the offer was to coach Strasbourg, and president Luiz Eduardo Baptista then lost confidence, prompting a sudden dismissal after only three league matches, one win.

Flamengo issued a brief statement of thanks without explaining the move. Early-season results had disappointed, including defeats to Fluminense in the Supercopa de Brasil and to Lanús in the Recopa Sudamericana in February.

Even so, the 40-year-old had lifted five trophies with the Mengão and posted a 70% win rate. He led 101 matches for 63 wins, 23 draws and 15 defeats, five this season.

A former left-back for Deportivo La Coruña, Atlético de Madrid and Chelsea, he retired in December 2023 after four seasons with Flamengo. He later coached the under-17s and under-20s before taking the first team, becoming the only man to win the Copa do Brasil, Brasileirão and Libertadores as both player and coach.

It was Flamengo’s worst start in 10 years, and even an 8-0 win in his final game drew hostile chants. After seven years at the club, joining in 2019, he said he was grateful for the opportunity and was leaving with his head held high and a clear conscience. His side also beat Chelsea at the Club World Cup and narrowly missed the Intercontinental Cup against PSG on penalties.
