Flamengo clinch 40th Carioca crown on penalties, extend lead in all-time ranking

Flamengo won the Campeonato Carioca by beating Fluminense 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at the Maracanã on Sunday night, sealing a third straight title and becoming the first club to reach 40 state crowns in Rio.
According to Globo.com, it was Leonardo Jardim’s first trophy since being announced as head coach this week, the Portuguese appointed to succeed Filipe Luís, who was dismissed after the semi-final against Madureira.
The updated all-time ranking of Carioca champions now reads: Flamengo 40, Fluminense 33, Vasco 24, Botafogo 21.
America 7, Bangu 2, São Cristóvão 2, Paissandu 1.
The result widens Flamengo’s advantage at the summit of the historical table.
