Flamengo match Brazilian club record with nine World Cup call-ups

Flamengo will equal Botafogo's 1934 record for a Brazilian club with the most players called up to a single World Cup, with nine selected.
According to Globo.com, Alex Sandro, Danilo, Léo Pereira and Paquetá will represent Brazil, Arrascaeta, De la Cruz and Varela are in Uruguay's squad, with Carrascal for Colombia and Plata for Ecuador.
In 1934, Botafogo also had nine players called for the tournament in Italy, all for Brazil, who named 17 in total. The nine were Pedrosa, Germano, Octacílio, Ariel, Martim, Canalli, Waldyr, Carvalho Leite and Áttila. Brazil went out in their opener, losing 3-1 to Spain.
Flamengo had anticipated about eight call-ups and have surpassed that tally. The club also have Viña, currently on loan at River Plate, selected by Uruguay.
Samuel Lino and Pedro were on Brazil's long list but were not picked. The World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada runs from 11 June to 19 July.
