On Thursday, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez announced plans to bid €150m for a superstar player if he is re-elected on Sunday. The 79-year-old is up against Enrique Riquelme in this weekend’s vote, and while he is the overwhelming favourite to retain the position he has held since 2009, he is determined to hammer home his bid with transfer moves.
Perez has already sealed the return of Jose Mourinho as manager, while Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries will also join if his candidacy is successful. But he wants to take things further with the signing of a Galactico, which is something that the club has generally shied away from in recent years.
Perez did not name the player he plans to bid on, although he did confirm that they play for a “Champions League club”. He ruled out Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Jeremy Doku, which has whittled the options down significantly, given the budget that has been drawn up.
According to El Partidazo de COPE, there are two names that have emerged as leading contenders: Joao Neves and Vitinha. The latter has been strongly linked with Real Madrid over recent months, while there is a lot of appreciation for the former, who has risen to stardom for Paris Saint-Germain over the last couple of seasons.

Notably, Perez stated that the desired signing in question is a “young player”, which would indicate that Neves is the one he’s gunning over – he’s 21, whereas Vitinha is 26. However, it is not ruled out that it could actually be Olise in spite of the public denial, with Diario AS claiming that the Bayern Munich winger is on the list of possible candidates.
It will be very interesting to see who the player is, but first, Perez’s focus must be on winning the presidential election before he can think about his latest Galactico project.
