Spurs are deep in relegation trouble as run-in goes to wire

Tottenham could have another rival in their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Things are looking bleak for Spurs, who are sat in the drop zone with five games remaining this term.

Roberto De Zerbi has recently arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to try and turn the club’s fortunes around, but the Italian is still waiting for his first win as head coach after watching his side draw 2-2 with Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.

Spurs led 2-1 going into the final knockings in north London, but conceded a gutting late equaliser when Georginio Rutter popped up to break his former boss’ heart.

The draw kept Spurs in the bottom three, and they were dealt a further blow on Monday night when West Ham drew with Crystal Palace to move two points clear of Tottenham.

Now, however, Jamie Carragher and former Irons striker Dean Ashton believe there is another team that should be looking nervously over their shoulders as the season reaches its business end.

That team is Newcastle United, who slumped to a fifth defeat in their last seven in all competitions after their 2-1 loss at home to Bournemouth over the weekend.

Eddie Howe suffered defeat against his former employers, with left-back Adrien Truffert netting the decisive goal at St James’ Park.

The result leaves the Magpies 14th in the table, on 42 points.

In trouble: Newcastle and Tottenham

They still sit above Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, but their recent run of torrid form has made Carragher and Ashton predict them a far lower finish come May.

On Monday Night Football, the pair issued their respective game-by-game predictions for the relegation candidates, from Forest to Spurs.

The pair’s predictions showed that, on those results, Newcastle would be projected to finish 17th, one place above the dreaded dotted line.

Both pundits predicted Spurs to finish 18th, which would see De Zerbi’s men drop into the Championship.

Next up, the north London club travel to already-relegated Wolves on Saturday.

“It feels like a game that Tottenham have to win by any means - by hook, or by crook,” Carragher said.

“I’ve seen Wolves enough where they’ve played against the top sides at home and got points. They put in a really poor performance against Leeds and they’re relegated now. I don’t know whether that will affect them.

“They’ve not won a Premier League game since December. It’s unbelievable,

“To think you can go to an away game and just win. I can’t see them losing the game - of course they could - but teams do go there and find it difficult.”
