Former Southampton boss Still has turned down an offer from Ligue 1 Nantes to return to management in France.
The 33-year-old was asked to leave St Mary’s in November with his side three points above the Championship relegation zone after winning only two of 13 league matches. He had been linked with vacancies at Norwich City and St. Etienne. Saints have since taken maximum points in six of eight games under Tonda Eckert.
“It wasn’t a problem, but rather a question of timing for me, which wasn’t ideal. I wanted to bring in staff, some people, and those people are still at their clubs.”
He told Canal+.
“And then, selfishly, I also want to think about my career. The next step in my career is important. I want to make the right choice.”
“I need enough perspective and to not jump into something where I don’t have all the information, where I don’t have complete control. I was very respectful, I thanked the Kita family [Nantes owner], but I told myself that for me, I prefer to take a step back, analyse what has happened over the last three or four years. The next step will be what it will be.”
Nantes are second bottom in France’s top flight and in a relegation fight after 12 consecutive seasons finishing comfortably. They parted ways with Luis Castro after 15 matches and have appointed Ahmad Kantari until the end of the season.
