Frenkie de Jong has become Barcelona’s most-capped Dutch player, reaching 293 appearances to overtake Phillip Cocu’s 292.
Barcelona beat Celta Vigo 1-0 at Camp Nou on Wednesday and, as reported by L'Équipe, De Jong was presented with a commemorative shirt after the match alongside Cocu.
He joined in 2019 from Ajax for €86 million and, at 28, continues a Dutch pathway from Amsterdam to Catalonia that includes Ronald Koeman, who played 264 Barcelona games between 1989 and 1995, and Patrick Kluivert, with 257 between 1998 and 2004.
De Jong has won seven trophies with Barcelona, two Ligas, two Copas del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups, making him the club’s second most decorated Dutch player behind Koeman. The former defender claimed 10, four Ligas, three Spanish Super Cups, one Copa del Rey, one Champions League and one European Super Cup.
The midfielder is contracted until 2029 and is well placed to add a Liga crown this season, with Barcelona top on 82 points, nine ahead of Real Madrid on 73 with six matches left.
