After the deal appeared to have collapsed, Ipswich Town are now set to sign Como striker Ivan Azon on loan.
Ipswich Town are reportedly closing in on the loan signing of Como striker Ivan Azon.
That's according to the East Anglian Daily Times, who claim that Ipswich are now set to complete a temporary deal for Azon after renewing their interest, just over a week after the move appeared to have collapsed.
After scoring 27 goals and providing nine assists in 150 appearances for Spanish side Real Zarazoga, Azon made the move to Como in February, but he has not made a single appearance for the Italian outfit since his arrival.
It was reported earlier in the summer that Ipswich had attempted to hijack Valencia's move for Azon, and according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, their proposal included a "heavy loan fee", as well as an obligation to buy the 22-year-old if they were promoted to the Premier League.
Despite Como manager Cesc Fabregas revealing that Azon had travelled to Suffolk to complete his switch to Portman Road, it looked as though the Tractor Boys were set for frustration in their pursuit of the Spaniard after the deal fell through at the last minute, but in another surprise turn of events, the move now looks to be back on.
Just when it seemed as though Ipswich were in pole position to land Azon's signature, McKenna revealed earlier this month that he was no longer expecting the club to sign the striker.
"The deal hasn't progressed. I won't say anything other than that out of respect to all parties. He's not a player we expect to join the club in this window," McKenna told the East Anglian Daily Times.
However, despite McKenna's public comments, it appears the Tractor Boys did not give up on their pursuit of Azon behind the scenes, and after reigniting their interest, they are now set to sign the Como striker on a straight season-long loan.
Valencia were said to be keen on Azon earlier in the summer, and journalist Pete O'Rourke claims that "several" other Spanish sides were also chasing the ex-Zaragoza man, but Ipswich are now set to finalise a deal for their long-term target.
Azon is one of three players who are expected to join the Tractor Boys imminently, with the club also believed to be closing in on the signing of West Bromwich Albion defender Darnell Furlong in a deal worth up to £4 million and Norwich City midfielder Marcelino Nunez in a shock £10 million deal.
Ipswich have made big profits on the likes of Omari Hutchinson, Nathan Broadhead and Liam Delap in recent weeks, and it certainly seems they are willing to splash the cash in the final stages of the transfer window.
The Tractor Boys are set to sign Furlong from one of their fellow promotion hopefuls in West Brom, while poaching Nunez from bitter rivals Norwich in an unprecedented move is another big statement of intent, and winning the race for Azon would be the perfect way to complete an eye-catching week for the Suffolk outfit.
Despite their attacking talent, Ipswich have struggled for goals in the early stages of the season, so bringing in another number nine in Azon to provide competition for George Hirst and Chuba Akpom will be a timely boost for McKenna.
