Jeremie Frimpong says new Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz will not “crumble under pressure” after signing for a club record fee.
The German international was announced as a Liverpool player on Friday in a club record deal from German side Bayer Leverkusen, with potential add ons making the 22-year-old the most expensive player in Premier League history if the criteria is met.
Frimpong, who played alongside Wirtz at Leverkusen for his entire time at the German club before signing for the Premier League champions at the beginning of June, believes the forward will do his talking on the pitch as he looks to hit the ground running in England.
“He’s my boy,” Frimpong said. “He’s a winner – a very, very special player and very hard working. The league will love him.
“I won’t have to talk much, just watch him. He doesn’t crumble under pressure, he likes pressure. He’s a guy that makes you enjoy football with the way he plays.”
Frimpong comes into the Liverpool side to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who departed the Reds at the start of June to sign for Spanish giants Real Madrid. The Dutch international always knew he wanted to return to the Premier League, and believes he has what it takes to take on the difficult task of replacing the Englishman.
“It’s big shoes but it’s Liverpool, it’s a big team who win trophies for a reason. If you play for Liverpool you have to fill in the shoes and perform. I’ve always believed in myself. I’m a winner. That’s what I’ll bring.”
He added: “The Premier League is the best league in the world. I grew up in Manchester so I always wanted to come back. It was always the plan.
“I know what being a champion is like at Bayer Leverkusen so joining a champion team is a privilege, especially for Liverpool. To go from watching them to playing for them is crazy. The manager has told me how I can help the team and he really likes me as a player. It’s given me extra motivation and belief.”
