According to Sunderland Echo, Gary Neville wants Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young to return to Salford City next season and has offered a glowing verdict on the 19-year-old amid England speculation.

Young is currently on loan at Salford, where regular senior minutes have followed a breakthrough year of 27 appearances in all competitions. He has already eclipsed that total this term, featuring 45 times.

A long-rated academy prospect, he joined Sunderland at seven and signed his first professional deal in November 2023. A productive spell at Darlington brought their Young Player of the Season award, and subsequent loans to Salford have provided consistent game time.

Neville said: "He’s done really well. Obviously, he is on loan with us until the end of the season. I hope we can get into League One so he can come with us, and he is very composed for a young goalkeeper. He has a big future."

Internationally, Young has progressed through England’s U18, U19 and U20 sides and has been called up by the U21s. His trajectory has prompted suggestions he could ultimately challenge for a senior place.
