Gary O'Neil has criticised the way Wolves were run after his appointment at Ipswich Town.

Wolves are gearing up for a new era under Cesar Peixoto, who will be tasked with taking the club back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The Old Gold’s relegation from last season was a humiliating one, as they were effectively down with months of the campaign to go, and there were fears they wouldn’t beat Derby’s record at one stage.

In truth, it was a relegation years in the making, as Wolves made plenty of mistakes under former chairman Jeff Shi, which included several poor transfer windows.

The way the club operated under Shi caused plenty of frustration among the fans, and that was shared by several managers, going back to the popular Nuno Espírito Santo.

Another manager who felt he didn’t receive full support was Gary O’Neil, with the ex-Strasbourg boss having just taken charge at Ipswich Town.

The 43-year-old had a positive start at Molineux, but it quickly turned sour, and he was sacked months into his second season.

O’Neil was particularly disappointed that he didn’t receive backing in the January window, as Wolves went on to lose an FA Cup quarter-final at home to Coventry at a time their squad was depleted, which felt like a real missed opportunity.

And, when speaking at his first Ipswich press conference, O’Neil suggested the contrast in the way the Premier League side operate was key to his decision to move to Portman Road.

I learned a lot from the Wolves spell. That's a club run very, very differently to this one," O'Neil said on his arrival in Suffolk.

"That's why I'm here and why I was so keen to take over here.”

Wolves must prove they have learnt from previous mistakes amid Gary O'Neil claims

Wolves have made huge mistakes over the years, which meant relegation felt inevitable after a prolonged period in the top flight.

But, Jeff Shi, who was chiefly responsible, paid the price as he was sacked last season, and the early signs under Nathan Shi, who is no relation, are positive.

Wolves have made good moves in the transfer market by securing Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, and they have also managed to keep Andre.

So, Shi would argue that he is going to change the perception of Wolves, and ultimately he will need to be judged properly over the next few months, or even beyond, as there is a lot of work to do.

It’s fair to say that O’Neil’s comments were a talking point on social media, with some highlighting the hypocrisy of the former boss, who was in talks over a return to Molineux prior to Rob Edwards’ appointment, so he was seemingly prepared to work for Fosun again at that point!

Yet, there were fans who shared O'Neil's view, as one fan admitted that Ipswich have been better run recently.

This Wolves fan also felt O'Neil had a point with his criticism.
