Ipswich have unveiled former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil as manager on a three-year contract as they prepare for their return to the Premier League. The 43-year-old arrives from Strasbourg.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the deal runs to the summer of 2029.

O’Neil said it was an honour to take charge, that he had followed the club’s progress closely, and that leading Ipswich in the Premier League is something he is hugely excited by. He added there is strong vision and ambition at the club, he understands the responsibility to supporters and the local community, and he is eager to get to work.

He led Wolves to 14th in the Premier League the season before he left, delivering notable wins over Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham, and reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals. A late collapse at home to then Championship Coventry City denied a Wembley trip and, despite a new long-term contract, marked the start of his downfall at Molineux.

He later departed after a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich, a fourth straight league loss and an 11th in 16, with Wolves 19th and four points behind fourth-bottom Crystal Palace.

O’Neil replaces Kieran McKenna, who announced earlier this month that he would step down after five years. He will be assisted by Tim Jenkins, Neil Critchley and Ed Ames, who worked with him in France. He becomes the 20th manager in the club’s 90-year history.
