Villarreal striker Georges Mikautadze returned to Metz on Sunday to support his former club against Brest, the day after a 1-4 defeat to Barcelona. Metz are battling to stay up in Ligue 1.

His surprise appearance by the pitch at Stade Saint-Symphorien lifted the mood among many frustrated supporters. He said it was emotional to see familiar faces again, and to be back on the pitch and in the stadium where he had scored and thrilled the crowd, speaking to Ligue 1+.

Raised in the Lyon area, he joined Metz in 2017 and debuted in 2020. After two seasons on loan at Seraing, he broke through, moved to Ajax, then returned six months later on a six-month loan, posting 11 goals and 3 assists in 17 Ligue 1 games as Metz went down to Ligue 2.

Asked about Metz’s current difficulties, bottom of Ligue 1, he reflected that there had been good times and others that were tougher. He said it is about adapting and doing your best to turn the less good into good.

Now in his first season with Villarreal after joining from OL, the 25-year-old would not be drawn on his future. He said he is happy in Spain and that things are going well, adding that they will see how the rest unfolds.

He plans to watch OL against OM at 20:45 on Sunday and praised Lyon’s squad and coach. He will not be at the Stade Vélodrome.
