Spain will face England in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final on Sunday [17:00 BST, 18:00 CEST] after Aitana Bonmatí’s extra-time strike saw la Roja edge past Germany in Zürich.

There had been little to separate the sides throughout the evening, and with the game still goalless after 90 minutes thanks in no small part to magnificent contributions from both goalkeepers, extra time was in order.

It was then – less than ten minutes before another penalty shootout – that Bonmatí struck gold, allowing the ball to run past her before giving chase and slotting past Ann-Katrin Berger from the tightest angle, setting up a rematch of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final against the Lionesses.

As it happened

Germany’s game plan became apparent rather quickly on Wednesday as the Frauenteam looked to set up a repeat of the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final, and Christian Wück’s side enjoyed a bright start as Klara Bühl was played through on goal with a long ball before ultimately dragging her shot wide of the target.

Spain weren’t going to sit back, though, and came incredibly close to taking the lead in the 21st minute when Esther González struck a sweet volleyed effort from range, forcing Ann-Katrin Berger to produce a fine fingertip save and push the ball over the crossbar.

Another golden chance fell for la Roja just before the half-time whistle sounded, as Barcelona’s Irene Paredes nodded against the woodwork from a corner; González’s audacious attempt to smash home the rebound was blocked by the German defence.

There were chances aplenty for both sides as the end of regulation time grew nearer. Bühl struck the outside of the post with a thunderous attempt from a free-kick, before Elisa Senß saw a heavily-deflected strike half-cleared by Cata Coll, who them recovered dramatically to parry away the rebound.

Thirty additional minutes were in order, and just as the feeling that penalties would be needed began to sink in, Spain found the breakthrough courtesy of none other than Aitana Bonmatí. A period of possession on the edge of the box saw a ball threaded through for the two-time Ballon d’Or winner, who turned to dash towards the by-line, beating Rebecca Knaak and threading a precise effort between Berger and the woodwork from the tightest of angles.

It proved to be just enough for Montsé Tome’s side, who have qualified for their first UEFA Women’s Euro final and will meet England at Basel’s St Jakob-Park on Sunday in a repeat of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup decider.
