Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window for a fee of £100m. The Germany international midfielder was being tipped as one of the best moves of the summer transfer window.

His brilliant record with the German club and the national team made him an obvious hit before even kicking a ball for Arne Slot’s team.

Wirtz has still not managed to score a goal or provide an assist in the Premier League after 11 matches.

Liverpool are in their worst form under Arne Slot

Slot’s team are eighth in the league after losing seven of their last ten games.

Wirtz is receiving criticism from the media and the fans for failing to make an impact this season but Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann believes that the blame should go to the team and not the player.

“Liverpool could also help him out by scoring some of the chances he creates,” Nagelsmann said, when asked about Wirtz’s performances this season, as reported by Sky Sports.

“They somehow don’t like to shoot the ball in.”

“To be honest, the overall situation doesn’t make it easy for Flo either,” said Nagelsmann.

“The whole club isn’t as stable this year as it was last year. It’s much harder to slip into the team now.

“If you look at the game against [Manchester] City, they were actually the worse team over the 90 minutes.

“So it’s also difficult for Flo to make a big impact. Ultimately, the overall situation is such that he just needs a little more time, which is normal; you see that with other players who move to the Premier League too.”

Liverpool’s latest defeat came against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium where they were convincingly beaten by Pep Guardiola’s side.

Goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku ensured a 3-0 win for the hosts to put Slot and his team into more misery.

Julian Nagelsmann calls for support for Wirtz

“We all know what he’s capable of, and it’s perfectly normal for a player of his age to go through a bit of a dip in form,” said Nagelsmann.

“We can’t expect him to perform at the same level for three years straight.

“Instead, we all need to support him a little bit so that he can clear his head here, and then maybe Liverpool could also help him out by scoring some of the chances he creates.

“That would be one idea, because he does not create few chances, it’s just that… they somehow don’t like to shoot the ball in, that’s also part of the truth.”

Wirtz needs more time to settle in England and come to terms with the pace and the physicality of the Premier League.

There is no doubt that his performances have been poor, considering the price tag that he came with and such performances cannot be ignored.

However, the Reds have to keep supporting the player. His past record is impressive, his potential is unquestionable.
