Gianni Infantino has hailed a milestone audience at the 2026 World Cup, saying in an Instagram post that one million fans have already attended matches and thanking supporters for filling the stadiums.

The tournament kicked off on Thursday, and 16 of the 104 fixtures have been played so far across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Infantino also shared a photo of himself with the holder of the millionth ticket.

The build-up featured heavy criticism of ticket prices, yet FIFA has broken its record for tickets sold for a World Cup edition.

The cost of entry even prompted Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, to watch the opening match from a fan zone rather than inside the stadium.
