Almost a month on from the incident involving Gianluca Prestianni and Vinícius Júnior, Gianni Infantino has renewed calls to confront racism in football.
According to Glorioso 1904, the FIFA president said future episodes similar to those seen during Benfica v Real Madrid should face a zero tolerance response, and that the sport must oppose discrimination with full force.
He argued that covering your mouth while speaking suggests you are saying something wrong, adding that if a player does so and makes remarks with racist implications, the player should be sent off.
Infantino said efforts are under way across the game to eradicate racism, stressing that it has no place in football and should not be accepted.
He also maintained that punishments alone are not sufficient. He suggested the culture must change, allowing players or others who act wrongly to apologise, which could lead to different sanctions.
