He only coached him for a short time, but Oliver Glasner has great memories of Michael Olise. The French superstar joined Bayern from Crystal Palace for €53 million, and he starred in his debut season with the Bavarians.
"He didn't surprise me," said Glasner. "It was really just a question of whether he would stay fit. When he's fit, it was clear that he would be a key player in the German Bundesliga because he simply has so much quality, and he’s a superb lad who brings a lot to the table.
"He can dribble, he can finish, he can set up, and he has a feel for space. I had the pleasure of having him with me for six or seven weeks in the end. Before that, he was injured for months. But hats off to the way Bayern managed him. I think he'll take another step forward this year"
Olise played every game in the Bundesliga last season. He was also part of France’s squad in the Paris Olympics. The winger kicked off the new season by scoring Bayern's goals in a 2-1 win over Lyon in a friendly played today at the Allianz Arena.
“He is who he is: short-spoken, not a man of big words,” said Glasner about Olise’s shy character. “He's a footballer, not a rhetorician, and he doesn't have to be. I think we'd all rather have such a gifted footballer who shows it on the pitch than one who makes big statements but doesn't follow through on it. I think it's important that people accept him for who he is.”
