Steven Gerrard has revealed that he held talks with Mohamed Salah to urge the winger to leave Liverpool ‘the right way’.

Salah was linked with an exit in January following a fall-out with manager Arne Slot. The Egyptian said he had been made a scapegoat for the club’s poor form after being benched by the Liverpool manager for three straight games.

“I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden we don’t have any relationship,” Salah said at the time.

“I don’t know why but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.

“It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.”

Salah has since repaired his relationship with Slot, but will leave Liverpool in the summer. An agreement has been reached for the 33-year-old to leave on a free transfer, after nine seasons at Anfield.

Former Liverpool captain Gerrard has revealed how he urged Salah not to leave in January under a cloud.

“I spoke to him around that interview at the time and sort of said to him ‘don’t do what you’ve done and go under a cloud.’ I spoke to him direct,” he told The Overlap podcast.

“He texts me now and again, or I text him, more to do if I’m going somewhere with Leo. Just so Leo can see him. I’m not close to him, but it gave me the opportunity to say ‘You’ve been here for eight or nine years, you’ve come here and got this legacy. Just go on your terms the right way’.”

“Still a little emotional from the incident. He was sub and in and out of the team at the time. He was upset. But, I just thought it would have been a shame if he’d left in January and just left.”
