According to Glorioso 1904, Gonçalo Oliveira issued a public apology on Wednesday after incidents during Porto v Benfica, expressing regret for his actions.
In a social media post, the Benfica defender said he regretted an ill-judged act that led him to damage the substitutes’ bench at Estádio do Dragão. He added that such behaviour does not reflect him or the values he is taught at the club.
The controversy escalated after viral videos showed the damage, and Porto announced a disciplinary complaint against the youngster. The match at the Dragão finished 1-0.
Oliveira is a Benfica academy product. This season he has 16 appearances, 11 in the Segunda Liga and five in the UEFA Youth League, across 1,395 minutes. The centre-back, valued at €2 million and under contract until 2027, has scored four goals and made two assists.
Benfica’s next game is on Saturday, 17 January 2026, at 20:30, against Rio Ave at Estádio do Rio Ave FC (Arcos) in Vila do Conde. It is part of the 18th round of the Liga Portugal Betclic 2025/26.
