Alex Greenwood says playing for England at the Etihad will be a special night for the Lionesses as they face Brazil.
It represents Sarina Wiegman’s squad’s first outing since their UEFA Euro 2025 success in Switzerland where they beat Spain on penalties in the final to retain the prestigious trophy.
Four members of the current City squad were part of the European winning side with Greenwood playing in every match on the journey to that victory.
And the Blues’ captain is joined in the latest England squad by Khiara Keating and Laura Blindkilde Brown.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s fixture in England press conference on Friday, Greenwood says the meeting with Brazil will be one to remember.
“It will be [special]. A lot of our player have some affiliation to Manchester, so it’ll be nice not just for me, but for a lot of our players in the team,” she said.
“Personally, going back to the Etihad will be really special and a really great occasion.”
Brazil, meanwhile, also claimed silverware over the summer as they retained the Copa America crown for the fifth time in a row thanks to a shootout victory over Colombia in the showpiece.
The fixture at the Etihad represents only the fifth time the nations have locked horns, with the last time they faced each other coming in 2023 in the inaugural Finalissima.
On that occasion, England were forced to penalties following a 1-1 draw at Wembley, before the Lionesses went on to beat Brazil 4-2 in the shootout.
And Greenwood is well aware of the South American’s quality, saying tomorrow’s clash won’t be easy.
She added: “[I’m looking forward to] challenging ourselves against an opposition we don’t usually get the chance to.
“It will be a really good test to see where were at and I’m looking forward to it.”
Following the historic Euros victory in Switzerland, the Lionesses returned to an open-top bus procession and a staged ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace to celebrate the success.
For Greenwood and the rest of the England squad the tournament and outpouring of support will be something that lives in their memories forever.
“It’s still important to enjoy what we did in the summer,” she said.
“We’ve not just turned up and forgot about it, we still talk about it and we’ll continue to do that.
“In the same breath we’re focused on the next challenge which is tomorrow and the next three games after that.”
