Grêmio have dismissed assistant coach James Freitas from the club’s permanent backroom staff, the coach confirmed in a social media post on Wednesday afternoon.

The decision comes four days after the club announced the appointment of Portuguese coach Luís Castro. Castro will bring two assistants, with his staff numbering seven including himself.

Freitas said working at a club of Grêmio’s stature was a privilege and credited president Guerra and his board for support during a challenging spell.

Born in São Lourenço do Sul, the 57-year-old has been at Grêmio since July 2024 after joining Renato Portaluppi’s staff. He also served under Roger Machado in 2022-2023 and earlier in 2015-2016. His career includes spells with Coritiba, Palmeiras, Fluminense, Cruzeiro, Atlético MG, Athletico and Cerro Porteño of Paraguay.

He took charge for the Gre-Nal on 19 April at the Arena, which ended 1-1. It was Grêmio’s first match after Gustavo Quinteros left and the last before Mano Menezes arrived.
