Argentina have named their 26 for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, with several Qatar 2022 winners left out, among them Valencia’s Guido Rodríguez.

According to Superdeporte, Lionel Scaloni finalised the list on Thursday, leaving out Marcos Acuña, Ángel Correa, Paulo Dybala, Germán Pezzella and Juan Foyth, the latter sidelined by an Achilles injury.

Ángel Di María and Franco Armani had already stepped away after the triumph, and Papu Gómez also stays out. In all, nine world champions miss the cut, with one enforced by injury and one through retirement.

There were other high-profile omissions. Highly rated teenager Franco Mastantuono, recently linked with Real Madrid, does not make it. Nor do Emiliano Buendía, fresh from a fine run capped by a stunning Europa League final goal for Aston Villa, or youngsters Matías Soulé, Alejandro Garnacho and Gianluca Prestianni.

New faces include Valentín Barco, valued for his versatility, and striker José Manuel López, rewarded for his rise at SE Palmeiras. Facundo Medina of Olympique de Marseille also earns a place.

Goalkeepers: Emiliano Martínez, Gerónimo Rulli, Juan Musso. Defenders: Leonardo Balerdi, Nicolás Tagliafico, Gonzalo Montiel, Lisandro Martínez, Cristian Romero, Nicolás Otamendi, Facundo Medina, Nahuel Molina.

Midfielders: Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, Valentín Barco, Giovani Lo Celso, Exequiel Palacios, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández. Forwards: Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez, Nicolás González, Thiago Almada, Giuliano Simeone, Nicolás Paz, José López, Lautaro Martínez.
