Guido Rodríguez landed at Manises around nine tonight, arriving to finalise a move to Valencia CF after ending his West Ham United spell. The 31-year-old Argentina international and world champion aims to regain influence and regularity in La Liga.
According to Superdeporte, the deal has been worked on for weeks at Carlos Corberán’s request for an experienced midfielder. He joins winter arrivals Umar Sadiq and Unai Núñez in a bid to raise the team’s level.
Rodríguez fits the brief of leadership, tactical order and defensive balance in a youthful, inconsistent squad. He is used to directing play from deep and taking responsibility on and off the pitch. His La Liga experience should aid a quick adaptation.
His West Ham stint stalled, with only eight appearances and 263 minutes this season. Mestalla now offers a platform to relaunch his club form and stay in Lionel Scaloni’s thoughts.
Twice a Copa América winner and a world champion with Argentina, he also impressed under Manuel Pellegrini at Real Betis. Notably, he featured in the La Cartuja final when Betis beat Valencia to lift the Copa del Rey.
Valencia are on their best run of the season, three straight wins across league and cup, yet broader numbers remain concerning, with defensive issues and patchy control. Rodríguez is intended to address those imbalances.
He will undergo a medical in the morning. If there are no setbacks, an official announcement could follow within hours, then he will link up with the squad under Corberán to be available as soon as possible.
