Gustavo Costas, 62, will continue as Racing head coach until December 2028 after agreeing new terms, having been left hungry for redemption after last Saturday's final defeat in Santiago del Estero. According to SuperDepor.com, the extension includes an updated salary.
President Diego Milito and sporting director Sebastián Saja had wanted him to stay. He will lead the first team through the current board's first four-year term.
There had been rumours he might not extend, with finances and squad building central to his demands, which Milito and Saja appear to have accepted. Time will tell how many and what calibre of reinforcements arrive in Avellaneda.
Costas was unhappy with recent transfer windows. In early and mid 2025, Racing lost quality with exits of Juan Fernando Quintero, Roger Martínez, Johan Carbonero and Maximiliano Salas, key to the 2024 Copa Sudamericana triumph.
Replacements have underwhelmed, among them Adrián Balboa, Tomás Conechny, Duván Vergara, Adrián Fernández and Alan Forneris. Franco Pardo exceeded expectations, yet missed the decisive penalty against Estudiantes in the Torneo Clausura final last Saturday.
His pay rise was not straightforward, leaders argued greater rewards should follow Copa Libertadores qualification. With the conditions clarified, Costas accepted to remain for the next three seasons at the club he loves.
In 2026, Racing will contest the Apertura and Clausura, the Copa Argentina and the Copa Sudamericana. Having failed to clinch a Libertadores berth at the Madre de Ciudades, they will play the Sudamericana again, a trophy they lifted last November under Costas.
