Guy Mowbray nudged Alan Shearer into saluting Sunderland on BBC World Cup commentary as Chemsdine Talbi came on for Morocco against Brazil in Group C.

The winger was a second-half substitute after an impressive first season on Wearside under Régis Le Bris, following the club’s return to the Premier League and a seventh-placed finish that secured Europe. Sunderland Echo notes that Talbi’s emergence has complemented the broader uplift.

He also sealed a place in recent Wearside folklore by scoring the equaliser at St James’ Park in the win over Newcastle United.

Talbi’s introduction prompted Mowbray to highlight Sunderland’s strong World Cup presence, saying the Black Cats have 12 players at the tournament, two more than Real Madrid, a sharp reversal from their League One years.

On air, Shearer teased that Mowbray sounded like a Sunderland fan. Mowbray replied he was merely inviting his North East knowledge to shine. Shearer acknowledged they had a great season, Mowbray joked there were no gritted teeth, and Shearer agreed.
