Chemsdine Talbi’s cameo for Morocco against Brazil sparked a playful on-air exchange as Guy Mowbray coaxed Alan Shearer into praising Sunderland during BBC’s World Cup coverage.
According to Sunderland Echo, the winger entered as a second-half substitute in the Group C meeting, fresh from an impressive first season on Wearside following the club’s Premier League return.
Under Régis Le Bris, Sunderland finished seventh to qualify for Europe. Talbi also etched his name into recent Wearside folklore by scoring the equaliser at St James’ Park in a victory over Newcastle United.
Talbi’s appearance led Mowbray to flag the Black Cats’ sizeable World Cup contingent, noting Sunderland have 12 players at the tournament, two more than Real Madrid.
Shearer quipped that Mowbray sounded like a Sunderland fan. The commentator replied that he was simply inviting Shearer’s North East knowledge to shine, before Shearer acknowledged the club had enjoyed a great season. Mowbray joked about the lack of gritted teeth, and Shearer agreed.
