Three months after registering his first career Bundesliga goal, Hamburg striker Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer has finally grabbed his second. Once again, the 24-year-old has delivered in the clutch. Königsdörffer scored what would prove the match-winner in yesterday’s 0-2 away win over Heidenheim. Königsdörffer’s HSV teammates were quick to congratulate him.
Not long after rumors surfaced that Middlesbrough had submitted a €4m offer for Königsdörffer near the end of the transfer window, multiple German sources confirmed that Hamburg rejected interest in their striker. Despite the fact that Königsdröffer hasn’t proven himself at the highest level yet, it appears as if the Hanseatic city state club still fancies the Berlin-native’s chances of ultimately doing do.
Köngisdörffer earned the start against Heidenheim on Sunday over January loan acquisition Damion Downs. HSV head coach Merlin could have also started transfer deadline day acquisitions Philip Otele and Otto Stange at center-forward, but opted to retain Köngisdörffer at the top of the attack despite a string of six starts without a goal.
Königsdörffer finds himself in line for one of his famous “waffle parties” after his second league goal of the season. The six-times-capped Ghanaian international nevertheless has more than private dining bliss to look forward to, however. The words of his teammates and coach surely taste better than the treat Köngisdörffer prepares to sink his teeth into.
“Ransi has taken so much flak,” HSV midfielder Nicolai Remberg noted in the mixed zone yesterday. “Everyone has often been against him. It’s unfair because he works so hard for the team, running and grinding away. Of course, as a striker, he is measured by his goals. Maybe he’ll get into a flow now. I wish him that.
“I wouldn’t have been surprised if he succumbed to the pressure,” Remberg continued. “But that wasn’t the case at all, neither in the locker room nor on the training ground. I tip my cap to him for that. This goal should give him a boost and no one deserves it more than him.“
“Anyone who knows him knows that Ransi always has a lightheartedness about him,” HSV keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes added in the mixed zone. “I don’t know if the last few weeks motivated him, but what sets him apart as a person is that he always believes in himself.”
“Ransi contributes a lot to the team,” head coach Polzin said at the post match press conference. “He works hard, opens up space, and sets up his teammates.“
