Harry Maguire could face an extended suspension after being charged with improper conduct, with the Manchester United defender already set to miss Leeds United’s visit to Old Trafford on Monday 13 April.
Maguire was sent off in a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth for pulling down Evanilson in the area, referee Stuart Attwell ruling it a denial of a goalscoring opportunity. The FA said in a statement that he has been charged following his 78th-minute dismissal on Friday 20 March, alleging improper conduct towards the fourth official, and that he has until Thursday two April to respond.
He will serve an automatic one-match suspension against Leeds and the charge could lengthen that absence. Any appeal would not change his status for that game, and he would only play if the red card were rescinded, which currently appears unlikely.
Michael Carrick criticised the decision, comparing it with two similar incidents involving Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo. He noted one was given as a penalty for United and the other was not, describing both as near identical with two hands on the attacker in control of the ball.
United have no fixture this weekend following their FA Cup exit to Brighton in January, giving Carrick time to plan without his centre-back. Leeds remain in the competition and travel to West Ham for a quarter-final on Sunday.
