Harry Maguire faces the prospect of an extended suspension ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League meeting with Leeds United after being charged with improper conduct.

The 33-year-old was sent off in the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth on Friday 20 March, dismissed for pulling Evanilson in the area in the 78th minute after referee Stuart Attwell judged a clear denial of a goalscoring opportunity. The FA confirmed in a Wednesday statement that he has been charged, alleging improper behaviour and abusive or insulting words towards the fourth official following his dismissal, and said Maguire has until Thursday 2 April to respond.

The red card brings an automatic one-match suspension, to be served when Leeds visit Old Trafford on Monday, April 13.

Even if he appeals the charge, he is still expected to miss that game, and he would only feature if the red card is rescinded, which currently does not look likely.

Manager Michael Carrick criticised the decision, arguing there was inconsistency after a penalty was awarded for a challenge on Matheus Cunha but not for a near-identical incident involving Amad Diallo, both involving a two-arm grab.

United have no fixture this weekend due to their FA Cup exit to Brighton in January. Leeds remain in the competition and travel to West Ham for a quarter-final on Sunday.
