“It is a bit of a sideways step,” said former Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen. He told Andy’s Bet Club while assessing Harry Wilson’s decision to join Leeds United.

Wilson ran down his Fulham contract last season, producing 10 goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League games. Leeds had chased him since last summer, failing on deadline day but sealing a four-year deal 10 months later. He has travelled to the USA with Daniel Farke’s squad.

“Harry Wilson will probably have a better contract at Leeds than he had at Fulham. Something about the move must have triggered his interest, although he might have been hoping for a team in Europe when he was playing so well last season.”

“He is a player who can make a difference and will definitely help Leeds. He must be happy with the move to sign such a long contract.”

Wilson said Leeds’ earlier approach weighed on his choice, as did the influence of Wales team-mates such as Ethan Ampadu. He could face boyhood club Wrexham in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time, with Sunderland and Liverpool to follow. Leeds then meet RB Leipzig, Manchester United and FC Augsburg before opening their Premier League campaign at Nottingham Forest on Saturday August 22.
