Former Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen has questioned whether Harry Wilson’s switch to Leeds United represents progress after the winger’s standout campaign.

"Harry Wilson will probably have a better contract at Leeds than he had at Fulham. Something about the move must have triggered his interest, although he might have been hoping for a team in Europe when he was playing so well last season." He was speaking to Andy’s Bet Club.

"It is a bit of a sideways step. He is a player who can make a difference and will definitely help Leeds. He must be happy with the move to sign such a long contract."

Wilson let his Fulham deal run down last season, producing 10 goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League matches. Leeds pursued him from last summer’s deadline day and finally signed the 29-year-old on a four-year contract 10 months later. He has travelled to the USA with Daniel Farke’s squad.

Wilson has said Leeds’ previous interest, plus encouragement from Wales team-mates including Ethan Ampadu, helped shape his decision. Leeds face Wrexham, Wilson’s boyhood club, in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time, then play Sunderland and Liverpool. Further friendlies with RB Leipzig, Manchester United and FC Augsburg precede a Premier League opener at Nottingham Forest on Saturday August 22.
