By the time Brennan Johnson slid at the back post to put Tottenham 4-0 up over Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday night, it was evident that this weekend had the potential to be season-defining.
And so when Mo Salah smashed his penalty home to put Liverpool 3-2 up on Southampton and send them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League, Reds around the world began to realise that this season is taking on a truly different tone.
Tottenham’s record against Manchester City of recent has been nothing short of sensational, taking 19 points from the four-time defending Premier League champions since the start of 2020.
The result in question means that Liverpool have a chance to go 11 points clear of City when they travel to Anfield next Sunday.
And an element that has made this situation all that sweeter is that Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglu, was a Liverpool fan growing up.
“It was the 70s so you went one of two ways. Liverpool or Man U at the time.” Postecoglu has previously said in a press conference.
“A couple of my best mates went for Man U so I went the other way so we could keep it interesting! Like any kid I had the posters up on my wall, Liverpool was my team.”
And whilst Postecoglu makes the point that circumstances change (he particularly jokes that he used to be a fan of the TV show ‘Happy Days’ but he no longer has pictures of main character ‘Fonzie’ on his wall), we are all aware that loyalties run deep.
We don’t think Postecoglu is lying when he says he is no longer a Liverpool fan. He’s proven to be a consummate professional and we all know the intensity of childhood emotion wanes the older we get.
But somewhere, in the back of his mind, there surely had to be a bit of satisfaction that he helped the Reds out by annihilating the closest competition.
You don’t have Kenny Dalglish posters on your wall when you’re growing up and not have a bit of happiness knowing you’ve made the King’s day.
It is funny how the world works. For all of the people involved in this sport, it is a Liverpool fan that has given the Reds actual breathing room at the top of the table.
Liverpool travel to play Tottenham on 22nd December. Let’s hope Ange remembers where his loyalties really lie and ensure his team don’t play half as well as they did at the Etihad.
But if the results go the right way, Liverpool might not even need it.
