According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, a World Weather Attribution analysis finds that heat and humidity this summer could jeopardise the World Cup between 11 June and 19 July in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with up to a quarter of matches potentially played in conditions at the limit for the human body. The risks apply to players and supporters.
The study models environmental risk across host cities, with the southern United States the main concern. Forecasts for Houston, Dallas and Miami point to temperatures above 30C that could feel close to 40C. For Spain, models suggest at least two fixtures could face extreme conditions.
Of the 104 fixtures, at least 26 have a high chance of being played above 26C, around 10 in stadiums without air conditioning. Five matches could approach 30C with feels-like readings near 40C.
Spain v Saudi Arabia on 21 June has been flagged. Netherlands v Tunisia on 25 June in Kansas City carries close to a 10% risk of postponement due to excessive heat. Knockout ties in Houston and Dallas, and the final, also show elevated thermal risk.
Since the region last hosted in 1994, climate change has sharply increased the likelihood of extreme conditions at this tournament. Warming has raised average matchday temperatures and made heatwaves more probable during the summer window.
The findings reignite debate on how to stage major events as the climate shifts. Proposals include moving calendars away from peak heat, as in Qatar, and steering clear of venues without sufficient cooling. Teams are urged to step up climate adaptation and wider environmental action.
