São Paulo have sacked Argentine coach Hernán Crespo on Monday, and, according to Coluna Do Fla, Flamengo featured in an internal dispute that contributed to his exit.

Crespo is said to have highlighted Flamengo’s investment to the board and pressed for greater backing, arguing that limited budgets were shrinking expectations each season.

He also referenced Palmeiras, another heavy investor, and the financial disparity unsettled him, a stance that was not accepted internally at São Paulo.

The hierarchy were further displeased by the response to elimination by Palmeiras in the Campeonato Paulista, feeling there was too much acceptance when a stronger reaction was required. The football department said players shared that view.

São Paulo will now seek a new head coach. They approached Filipe Luís, formerly of Flamengo, but he said he would not return to work in Brazilian football in 2026.

Flamengo, who already have a new coach, remain focused on the next fixtures. They face Cruzeiro on Wednesday 11 at 21:30 Brasília time in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
