“He’s really something else…”: Bastian Assomo puts himself forward as a backup for Kane | OneFootball

Bastian Assomo continues to turn heads during FC Bayern’s preseason. Following his strong performance against Wehen Wiesbaden, the 16-year-old also scored in the 2-1 friendly win against Jeju SK, further cementing his strong impression. He subsequently received praise from teammate Tom Bischof.

For a long time, the record champions were linked to high-profile center forwards such as Dusan Vlahovic and, most recently, Benjamin Sesko. But while external candidates were being discussed, Bastian Assomo has pushed his way into the spotlight with strong performances.

The forward has been one of the biggest standouts of the preseason so far. With his physicality, goal-scoring instinct, and presence in the penalty area, the young striker continues to draw attention—and is thus positioning himself for further playing time under Vincent Kompany.

After the victory over Jeju SK, Tom Bischof had words of praise for the 16-year-old forward. “He’s already incredible for his age. The way he holds onto the ball. And he has a very good finish. He’s a classic box striker and scores his goals,” the midfielder raved.

Assomo also makes a positive impression in terms of character: “He’s a calm guy and a very good soccer player. A classic striker who scores his goals.”

The youngster is considered one of the greatest offensive talents at the Bayern Campus. He transferred from Hertha BSC to Munich in the summer of 2025 and has impressed ever since with an exceptional goal-scoring rate. In his first twelve appearances for the U17s and Bayern II, he scored twelve goals.

Standing about 1.90 meters tall, Assomo possesses the physical attributes of a modern center forward. At the same time, he stands out for his dynamism, athleticism, and finishing ability—a combination that makes him an extremely difficult opponent to mark.

Internally, however, the Munich club wants to develop the young talent step by step. The current focus is on further developing Assomo’s technical skills so that he can hold his own at the highest level in the long term.

For the upcoming season, the forward is primarily slated to play for the reserve team, as reported by SPORT1. There, he is expected to gain regular playing time under coach Dante. Especially given the difficult start to the season for Bayern’s reserves—who are still waiting for their first goal after two Regionalliga matches—Assomo could quickly take on an important role.

However, his performances in preseason already show that the path to the first team might not be too far off. Should the youngster continue his development, Kompany is likely to keep a close eye on him in the coming months.

In the long term, club officials dream of integrating Assomo into the first-team roster. By the time Harry Kane’s contract in Munich expires, the 16-year-old will have had plenty of time to continue developing and prove himself ready for greater challenges.
