Liverpool’s academy has nurtured and developed some of the brightest talents in recent years, both homegrown and those who have arrived from rivals, in order to ramp up their trajectory towards senior football.

Whilst much of the fanfare lately has been around Rio Ngumoha, one other talented teen has gone somewhat under the radar on his own upward trajectory.

Trey Nyoni, signed from Leicester City in 2023, the 18-year-old signed a new long-term contract with the Reds last summer and has already made 15 first-team outings for the club incluing two Champions League appearances.

Despite being a regular in Arne Slot’s squads and a constant on the training ground, there were conversations around the need for a loan move in January, although nothing ever came close to materialising.

Following on from perhaps his most impressive cameo this season against Wolves in the FA Cup fifth round win, Nyoni was back at the AXA on Under 21 duty against the same opposition on Sunday afternoon and was instrumental in a first-half demolition as the young Reds scored five unanswered goals.

Could Trey Nyoni force his way into Arne Slot’s Liverpool team?

Speaking after the match, manager Rob Page was full of praise for the young midfielder…

On dropping down to Under 21s: “He’s handled it with class, absolutely. He’s a top bloke and an unbelievable player, so he gets on great with the lads, and he’s still a young lad himself. So, you know, I think he’s best mates with Amara (Nallo). So whenever he comes down, he’s great to have around him.

On his best traits: “Talk about football intelligence on the pitch, but he’s got it, so you can see why he’s gonna have a bright future in the game. He’s brave on the ball, he can play as a six or an eight, he’s so intelligent, he knows when to drop the ball to create a three. He can play as an eight, as I said, he’s got the athleticism as well to run him behind him. Just an all-around great player.”

Albeit opportunities have so far been few and far between when it comes to starting matches at first-team level, it remains apparent that there is a clear roadmap when it comes to Nyoni’s future at Anfield.

Supremely talented and highly regarded by both Page and Slot, the midfielder needs to take every forthcoming opportunity at every level, and another pre-season tour with many first-team regulars on World Cup duty will act as another major platform this summer.
