Chelsea are expected to return with a second bid for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka in the coming days, with the Swiss midfielder still in place after an opening £8m offer was immediately rejected.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is believed to be driving the push after their successful spell together at Bayer Leverkusen, and Xhaka is said to be keen on a reunion before the new Premier League season. Sunderland insist the Switzerland international is not for sale. Any renewed bid, expected in the region of £10m to £12.5m plus add-ons, would still fall short of the £17.5m Sunderland paid after Xhaka won the Bundesliga and German Cup with Leverkusen.
