Valencian fans often imagine a World Cup or Euros run for a putative Selecció Valenciana. With the tournament nearing and sticker-album season in full swing, Superdeporte has sketched a squad that could fuel that daydream.
Antonio Sivera of Deportivo Alavés would start in goal, with Real Oviedo revelation Aaron Escandell as back-up.
The back line would blend emerging talent with established names: Andrés García (Aston Villa), Pau Navarro (Villarreal), Alejandro Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen), Carlos Romero (Espanyol), José Luis Gayà (Valencia CF), Cristhian Mosquera (Arsenal), Víctor Chust (Elche), Pau Torres (Aston Billa) and Yarek Gasiorowski (PSV). Such depth would allow a range of shapes and approaches.
Technical quality would define midfield. At the base, Chema Andrés (Stuttgart) and Pepelu (Valencia CF) would sit behind creators Carlos Soler (Real Sociedad), Javi Guerra (Valencia CF) and Pablo Fornals (Real Betis).
Ferran Torres (FC Barcelona), Rubén García (CA Osasuna), Fran Navarro (Sporting de Braga) and Carlos Espí (Levante UD) offer a versatile front line. Espí is cast as the penalty-box specialist who could swing tight tournament games.
The names point to a vibrant talent pool, many of them still young. In this imagined XI, Valencian football could dare to dream of something special.
