Sunderland’s 0-0 home draw with Manchester United on Saturday has kept a top-half Premier League finish in play, and an outside tilt at Europe remains possible. Any continental push, which would be only the second in the club’s history, now depends on favours elsewhere.
According to Sunderland Echo, Regis Le Bris’s side close out the campaign at Everton, then at home to Chelsea, with two games to turn promise into position.
While this season’s merit figures are yet to be released, last season provides a guide. Prize money rose per place, from £53.1m for first to £2.6m for 20th, underlining the value of finishing higher.
Clubs also receive equal-share broadcast income. Last season every side collected £29.8m from domestic rights and £59.2m from international deals.
A strong finish could hand the Black Cats a sizeable financial boost ahead of a big summer in the transfer market. Two positive results could help maximise league position and returns.
