Jamie Vardy’s story at Leicester City remains one of the greatest fairytales English football has ever seen, but the prospect of a shock return to the club is now beginning to gather attention following their relegation to League One. He played 13 seasons with the Foxes but only three in the Championship and none below it.

The veteran striker departed the King Power Stadium at the end of the 2024/25 campaign after more than a decade of unforgettable service, bringing an emotional end to a spell that transformed both his own career and the fortunes of Leicester. Having initially joined from non-league side Fleetwood Town in 2012, Vardy went on to establish himself as a club legend.

He played a crucial role in Leicester’s incredible Premier League title triumph under Claudio Ranieri in 2015/16, while also helping the club lift the FA Cup, Community Shield, and secure memorable European nights in both the Champions League and Europa Conference League.

The 39-year-old’s future is once again becoming a talking point amid speculation that Leicester could look to bring one of the club’s greatest-ever players back to the King Power Stadium as they prepare for life in the third tier. Vardy was said to be keen on a player-coaching role with Leicester, which could be a fitting final chapter.

Rebekah Vardy has dismissed the claims as 'fake news', but there has been plenty of discussion about the legendary Leicester figure this week. In fact, Vardy recently reacted to Leicester's relegation to League One, with his love for the club still apparent.

Those at Leicester are now looking for any positives after two miserable campaigns of back-to-back relegation. It could also yet be a dreary end to Vardy's season with Cremonese, too, as they face the prospect of relegation like Leicester.

The experienced centre-forward has six goals and two assists in 27 appearances this term, scoring recently in a 3-0 win over Pisa to hand his side a much-needed three points as they battle with Lecce to survive. Vardy's side have just two games remaining to secure their Serie A status.

They could be his final games, having penned a one-year deal with the club. But just how much is he paid after joining Cremonese? Could a side in England's third tier afford such a wage? Per estimates from Capology, only two players are paid more than Vardy at Cremonese this season.

The striker is joint-third with Antonio Sanabria and Warren Bondo the only players on more than his estimated €35,577 wage. That equates to around £30,800 and is more than the vast majority of League One players are likely to be paid.

Jamie Vardy's return to Leicester could make sense if u-turn can happen

It's fair to say that stepping into a coaching capacity would allow someone like Vardy to shape the next generation while maintaining his connection to the club. But, more importantly, at a time when Leicester need direction and belief, Vardy coming home would be a great first step.

There has already been talk of him returning to the club in the coming weeks but Vardy's season in Serie A could prevent a reunion with Leicester to celebrate 10 years since their iconic Premier League title win in 2016. That is a shame but supporters would ideally want something more permanent.

Therefore, this player-coaching role could be a great next step for the great man himself and for his family. It's a shame it has been dismissed as fake, because the idea in theory is a good one. He could continue to support matters on the pitch in the third tier while transitioning into his next steps after retiring.

It ought to be a win-win if an agreement can be made financially and if something concrete emerges in terms of genuine interest.
