Charlie Kelman made the move from West to South London this summer
The future of Charlie Kelman was an interesting story over the course of the summer transfer window.
The 23-year-old had just come off the back of a breakout season on loan at Leyton Orient from Queens Park Rangers, winning League One's golden boot and being a huge part of Richie Wellens' side, who went 90 minutes away from achieving Championship promotion.
Now, with his stock as high as it ever had been, the Hoops had a decision to make - cash in on the American, or hope that his form from the prior season wasn't just a one-off. Kelman's record before last season was unremarkable to say the least, especially at QPR, where he had failed to score in 26 appearances.
In the end, cash in was the decision they made, and the side sold Kelman to Charlton Athletic for an initial fee of £3.5 million, which could eventually rise to £5 million.
QPR were able to bank a decent fee for him, and the Addicks picked up a striker who could be a big player for them in their first Championship campaign since 2019/20, so there's an argument to be made about both sides winning out here.
But, how much of a win wage-wise was it for the American, who was moving from a side where he was a fringe player, to one where his importance arguably should be reflected more in his weekly earnings?
According to the estimates of Capology, Charlie Kelman earned just £5,000 per week during his time at QPR. Those estimates also state that the American earns £6,500 per week at his new club, Charlton.
It's a wage hike, but not a massively significant one, and, barring any improved contract offers, Kelman is set to remain on £6,500 throughout the course of the four-year deal he signed with the Addicks this past summer.
Compared to the rest of the Charlton squad, Capology estimates that Kelman's weekly wage puts him in the middle of the pack, with 12 other players earning more than him.
If the 23-year-old does hit the astronomical heights he found during his spell at Leyton Orient, the relatively small chunk of the wage bill he takes out will ultimately be seen as a big success for the club.
Whilst it will be a success if Kelman's goalscoring ventures make his relatively middling wage seem undervalued, it also provides little in terms of risk if the transfer doesn't work out.
The American hadn't scored a Championship goal before his move to the Valley, and if that carried on to the point where he fell out of favour at Nathan Jones' side, he wouldn't be sat on the bench soaking up a big chunk of the overall wage bill.
Here, Kelman should be able to get on with his business relatively distraction-free, as the only pressure on him will be the pressure to live up to the golden boot-winning campaign he had in League One last season.
