Premier League-chasing Millwall are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping options in the January transfer window, but he might not come cheap.

Millwall are in the market to strengthen their goalkeeping options in the January transfer window, but the option that they're reported to have settled on may not come cheap.

With a 4-0 win against Charlton Athletic having strengthened their position in the Championship play-off places, Millwall are looking to go one further on their near-misses in the second-tier this season. In 5th place in the table, the Lions have built up a six-point buffer between themselves and 7th-placed Bristol City as they seek to improve upon the 8th-placed finish they managed at the end of 2024-25.

And they've been one of the highest-profile teams in the division during the January transfer window, as they seek to consolidate that position further.

They are already closing in on the capture of experienced Sheffield Wednesday midfield talisman Barry Bannan, and reports on Sunday morning are offering further details on the Lions' move for an experienced Championship goalkeeper who's lost his first-team place since his team was promoted to the Premier League.

Millwall are chasing the experienced Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson

Reporting on his Patreon this morning, journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Millwall are in "advanced" talks to sign their promotion-winning goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

But if Patterson is to make the journey from Wearside to South-east London, he might not be cheap. Nixon reports that Sunderland are chasing a loan move, and that the Black Cats are after Millwall paying "as much as his £25,000-a-week wages as possible."

He also reports that Sunderland want Millwall to pay £8 million to take to goalkeeper on a more permanent basis, and would be looking for a commitment from the Lions to take the goalkeeper on a permanent basis. Millwall, he confirms, would prefer the loan option, and their valuation of the player is closer to £3 million, less than half the amount that Sunderland want for him.

Anthony Patterson might not be cheap, but he is certainly experienced

NIxon's report of Anthony Patterson's wage at Sunderland varies from the Capology estimation for him. They estimate him to have been on £10,000-a-week until promotion to the Premier League at the end of last season, with that wage doubling during the summer.

The arrival of the goalkeeper would make him one of the highest-earners in the Millwall squad, but they would be getting a lot of goalkeeper for their money. Patterson was Sunderland's first choice in their promotion-winning team last season, and was somewhat unfortunate to find that the Black Cats' summer transfer splurge included the arrival of Robin Roefs, which turned out to drop him to the substitute's bench for much of this season.

Millwall could do with extra goalkeeping cover. Lukas Jensen suffered another serious injury playing for their under-21s in December, and is not expected to play again this season. Max Crocombe has been their first choice for most of this season, but should Patterson arrive at The Den, he will have a fight on his hands to retain his first-choice position.

£8 million is a lot of money for a club without Championship parachute payments to be spending on a new goalkeeper, particularly a back-up. But Anthony Patterson is an excellent goalkeeper who has been a victim of his team's success as a result of their promotion to the Premier League at the end of last season. With plenty of options available to get this transfer done for at least the second half of this season, Millwall fans well find a new face in sticks for them for the remainder of this season, at least.
