Huddersfield should make a move for Salford City winger Kelly Nmai before the end of the summer transfer window - he's already had League One interest

Huddersfield Town have enjoyed an impressive summer transfer window followed by a strong start to the season, but there will still be some work to do for the Terriers this summer.

After a woeful campaign following their relegation from the Championship last season as Huddersfield drifted into a mid-table finish in League One, owner and chairman Kevin Nagle took the surprise decision to appoint rookie Lee Grant as their new head coach.

Grant, who had served on the backroom staff of Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town, was then backed heavily by Town as they brought in a raft of eye-catching additions for the division, most notably with the signing of Alfie May from Birmingham City for £1.2 million.

It will take time for Grant and his Town side to properly gel, yet they have still started the season with back-to-back victories in the league, defeating last year’s play-off finalists Leyton Orient 3-0 at the Accu Stadium on the opening weekend of the season, and then going to Reading and defeating them 2-0 too, before a penalty shootout win over Championship side Leicester City in the first round of the EFL Cup.

Things look to be going well, and their squad is very strong, but there is one area of the pitch still to be properly strengthened, and that would be the winger positions - and one man they should target is Salford City winger Kelly Nmai.

Kelly Nmai would be ideal for Huddersfield Town - they should do what Bolton Wanderers couldn't do

Netherlands-born Kelly Nmai has been a revelation for Salford City in League Two, and it remains a surprise that he is still at the club as late as this in the transfer window.

The 21-year-old, who was voted Players’ Player of the Year for Salford last season, has been the reported subject of interest from Middlesbrough and Preston North End, with FLW exclusively revealing earlier in the transfer window that the Championship pair had enquired about the attacker.

More concrete interest though, came from Huddersfield's divisional rivals Bolton Wanderers, with the Trotters seeing a bid rejected for the talented forward.

Steven Schumacher ended up moving on to other targets, with Amario Cozier-Duberry, Thierry Gale and Ibrahim Cissoko all arriving to add pace and creativity in wide areas - it means though that Nmai is still on the market.

His pace and directness, with excellent dribbling abilities, have marked him out as an excellent player at League Two level and one that has been eyed up for a bigger move, and his skillset would help Huddersfield a lot if they were to make a move.

Huddersfield Town could move to the next level in attack if Kelly Nmai is added

Discussing Nmai's pace as the only reason as to why he would be a good signing is reductionist and unfair, with excellent balance and technical qualities also consistently displayed throughout last season at the start of this one.

However, it is perhaps the standout attribute and quality that would make him such a good fit as a point of difference for Lee Grant and his Huddersfield side.

Huddersfield have added a lot of experience in both defence and midfield, with a few options in attack, such as Alfie May as well as Leo Castledine, to an extent, and Marcus Harness.

Having previously recruited for a back three shape under Michael Duff, Huddersfield currently lack genuine attacking width and, with Grant shaping up with a 4-2-3-1 in the opening couple of weeks of the season, added quality and depth is required in those positions.

Ruben Roosken - signed from Heracles in January - has been occupying the left wing position so far this season under Grant, but he is a more direct, left-footed option who has featured more at wing-back in his career, and with Mickel Miller sidelined, he may be needed further back on the pitch.

Nmai is a different type of wide player who wants to cut inside and drive at defenders before taking shots or trying to secure assists, and that's what Huddersfield don't currently have.

The current Salford man would surely be better suited to a gradual step up and more guaranteed playing time at Huddersfield, rather than jumping to the Championship, if he was to leave Salford this summer, and if a deal can be struck, then it's one that, if successful, the Terriers could make profit on down the line.

Although with Karl Robinson revealing that he wouldn't accept a £1 million bid for Nmai if it came in and if it was up to him, it might take a bit higher of a seven-figure fee to get a deal done.
