"I may not fit" - George Honeyman opens up on Millwall contract situation | OneFootball

The midfielder is currently set to leave The Den at the end of the season.

George Honeyman has stated that he would like to stay at Millwall but he hasn't had any discussions with the club over a new contract and has questioned if he fits with their plans for the future.

The 30-year-old is, arguably, having his best season for the Lions since moving to South East London from Hull City, in a deal reported to be worth £600,000, in the summer of 2022.

His previous best statistical campaign for the club was his first (2022/23). He racked up four combined goals and assists - a marker which he has already hit after just 14 appearances in this new term.

Honeyman's performances, and those of the other Millwall players, have guided the Lions to sixth in the league as things stand. They've won back-to-back games against Burnley and Leeds United. They face Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium in one of Saturday's early kick-offs.

He has timed having his best season with the club, so far, well, as his contract is up at the end of this season. Talks between him and the Lions have not started yet, according to the midfielder, but he believes those things will "take care of themselves" if he continues to play well.

"Yeah – definitely. I really enjoy it here," said Honeyman to the South London Press, when asked about whether he'd want to extend his stay at The Den. "We’ve got a great dressing room and fantastic staff to support us on and off the pitch.

"My wife-to-be is settled down here in work. So it would definitely be easier. But, at the same time, you also know it is a business side of it.

"You look at the age of players that are coming into the football club, I may not fit the model for them anymore. I don’t know…I’m purely guessing here."

Honeyman continued: "It’s only November so I’m pretty relaxed about it (his contract situation) – as relaxed as you can be.

"Ultimately if I play well and help the team win then it is good for both parties for whatever comes down the line.

"That is up to the club to initiate. Those things take care of themselves if you stay in the team, play well and the team wins. So we’ll see.

"I have to be open-minded so something doesn’t spring up or surprise me so that I’ve put all my eggs in one basket.

"That is probably as much as I’ve thought about it because I probably feel if I help the team win, keep trying to perform – whether it is Millwall or somewhere else – that something will happen for me.

"It’s a bit of an uncontrollable on my behalf. I can only focus on my performances."

Age shouldn't put Millwall off of a new deal for Honeyman

The 30-year-old isn't wrong about his club's recent tendency to go for players who have a bit less mileage in their legs, but, as he said, performance will ultimately dictate whether they want to keep him or not.

Currently, he is on pace to rack up around 12 direct goal contributions this season. This is likely down to his new number 10 role that he has been playing in, but it's a marked increase on what he'd been doing previously.

Honeyman is estimated to be one of Millwall's lowest earners at £5,769 per week, according to Capology. Even if that were to double in his next deal, he wouldn't be near the top earners at The Den.
