The Chelsea captain has been in brilliant form this season, impressing at both right back and in midfield under both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
However, James is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, and it’s unclear if he’ll feature for the Blues again this season.
Things aren’t going well for Chelsea as they were thrashed 8-2 over two legs by PSG in the Champions League, whilst they’ve also lost their last two league games against Everton and Newcastle.
Chelsea are certainly struggling without James, who signed a new six year contract earlier this month, and it’s no surprise given he’s one of the best players at the club.
Despite getting knocked out by PSG, Cole believes James is a better defender than Mendes, as he selected the England international in a game of winner stays on for The Overlap.
“If I think about what I would like in my full-back, I’m going to go with Reece James,” he said.
James has made 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and registering two assists, whilst Mendes has scored six goals and registered six assists in 34 appearances.
