According to a report by Stephen McGowan now at The Herald, early discussions are in motion about a potential new stadium that could house Celtic FC Women, theRangers and Glasgow City, while also serving as a venue for Scotland Women’s matches and possibly the 2035 Women’s World Cup.

Proposed stadium could have a capacity of between three to five thousand

The planned stadium, with a capacity of 3,000 to 5,000 seats, would involve Celtic leaving Hamilton’s New Douglas Park and theRangers shifting from the Broadwood  Stadium in Cumbernauld.

Glasgow City would depart their 2,000-seat home at Petershill Park, which also houses as a training ground for Partick Thistle’s men’s squad.

Sharing a stadium presents clear scheduling challenges with all three sides competing in the same league, but one solution being considered is the addition of Friday night fixtures to ensure two teams can play at the venue each weekend. Equally the stadium could easily schedule two Sunday matches on the same day, as has already happened at League Cup semi-finals at Stirling’s Forthbank Stadium.

A pilot for a new type of ‘hub venue’

The project is being seen as a pilot for a new type of ‘hub venue’ – a purpose-built ground for multiple teams to share, which could pave the way for similar developments throughout the country if the initiative moves forward.

The move is part of a wider effort to upgrade infrastructure in women’s football, offering all three clubs access to a stadium specifically designed to meet their needs. For high-demand matches expected to surpass the 5,000-seat limit, Celtic and theRangers could still use their men’s stadiums on select occasions throughout the season, as they already do.
