FC Bayern are continuing to sound out the defensive market – despite Dayot Upamecano’s impending contract extension. Now a prominent name has emerged in the shape of John Stones. An English insider has added fresh impetus to the rumours, pointing to initial activity from Munich in the background
According to information from British transfer insider Mark Brus, the German record champions are looking into the possibility of signing the Manchester City defender. Just a few weeks ago, it was reported that the 31-year-old had no concrete role to play in Munich. According to Brus, however, the situation has changed
Speaking to the portal Caught Offside, the journalist cites a source close to the player: „Bayern have already taken steps behind the scenes to persuade Jones. His old team-mate Vincent Kompany could be the key, as could Harry Kane. But a final decision will not be made now.“
Bayern are said to have made at least loose contact, with the connection to Vincent Kompany, who knows Stones from their time together in the Premier League, and compatriot Harry Kane in particular likely to play a role

The England international’s contract situation is particularly explosive. Stones is only tied to Manchester City until the summer of 2026. According to Caught Offside, however, there are growing indications that he may not receive a new contract. This would make him available on a free transfer at the end of the season
In addition to FC Bayern, Atlético Madrid and AC Milan are also said to be keeping a close eye on the situation. So the competition is not sleeping
Only recently, BILD reported that Stones was an „interesting option“ for Munich in principle, but that the track was not really hot. The latest statements from England now suggest that there is at least some movement behind the scenes
In sporting terms, Stones is no longer an undisputed regular at Manchester City. In the current Premier League season, the veteran has only made four appearances in the starting eleven. Since his move from Everton FC in 2016, he has won numerous titles with the Citizens, but no longer plays the central role of previous years
It remains to be seen whether the initial soundings will actually turn into a concrete transfer plan, but one thing is clear: FC Bayern is keeping its options open in the background – even in positions that are supposedly already well filled.
