Inter Milan legend Beppe Bergomi has delivered a detailed assessment of the Nerazzurri’s current squad, identifying key areas that need reinforcement.
Speaking on After Party – Best of Europe on Sky Sport, via FCInterNews, Bergomi reflected on the recent 93rd-minute corner goal conceded against Atletico Madrid.
Indeed, a heartbreaking result which followed a defeat to AC Milan at the weekend.
The Nerazzurri performed well in both matches but were unlucky and narrowly lost both.
“The goals are conceded whether you mark zonally or man-to-man,” Bergomi said.
“Inter is considered a structured team, but on average it’s a small side. The defenders, one attacker, and the midfielders are small.
“That’s why Chivu opted for zonal marking, and if you defend zonally, you must be skilled at attacking the ball. I’ve heard people blame Barella, but he’s the least responsible in that situation. Whoever occupies that area must be good at going for the ball.”

Bergomi also noted that Inter’s weaknesses are longstanding.
“This team has been like this for five years. You’re dazzled because it plays good football, and it’s been effective in Europe. But physically, it suffers in the final stages and concedes goals in certain situations.
“Calhanoglu losing the ball on the break? That happened in a derby five years ago too. The problems are the same; this team has always been able to compete and win, but the vulnerabilities persist.”
The former defender then pinpointed the specific positions the Nerazzurri need to strengthen.
“This squad has needed for years a fast defender, a physical midfielder, and a one-on-one forward who allows you to conserve energy.
“You shouldn’t always need eight players above the ball to create chances. Opponents only need one opportunity to win games: Milan needed just one. Inter cannot allow that and must play a very demanding style.”
